Aaaah, if Times Square was music, then this would be its hot tenor-sax jazz riff with icy cool tones of blue and orange. This photo, captured at twilight, shortly after sunset, shows the wonderful color abstractions possible in this pulsating New York City neighborhood. I love to rotate and skew my camera viewfinder looking for abstract and improvisational compositions in Times Square. The “Golden Hour” around sunset is the perfect time to do so. Camera: Canon 10D, Tokina 19-35mm lens.

This Times Square, New York City photo was captured during my favorite time of day. There is a time frame of perhaps ten minutes or so, just after sunset, when the light in the sky is in balance with the street lighting. I captured this scene, showing details of Thomson Reuters building in Times Square at that moment. The raw camera file (Canon Rebel XS and Canon 55-250mm EF-S IS lens) was edited in Lightroom 3.

The Times Square photo seen below was also captured just after sunset. No two evenings are exactly the same. The light constantly changes, giving the look of Times Square a new personality each evening!

This winter sunset in Phoenix, Arizona is one of my personal favorites. It shows the remarkable natural light displays that can adorn Arizona evenings this time of the year. Captured in Papago Park, Phoenix, this view overlooks one of the park’s fishing lagoons. What the photo does not show is the balmy breezes and soothing quiet that comes with evening in Papago. It was my local park of choice for a quick after work hike, and to watch the sunset. Sadly, this park has long been overused and and shows signs of decay. I hope it receives the care it deserves. To my eye, it is one of Phoenix’s most attractive natural attractions.

Pier 17 Sunset In Mauve. This image shows Pier 17 in downtown Manhattan, suffused with a mauve New York City sunset. The original raw photo was converted in Adobe Lightroom 3 and edited with Fotosketcher. The digital mat and frame were also added in Fotosketcher. To reduce the watercolor effect to taste, I created a layer with the original photo and reduced the opacity of the watercolor version until I was happy with it. Finally I did some minor dodging and burning and sharpening to create the final image. Camera: Samsung GX 1S, 18-55mm kit lens.

Times Square In The Golden Hour. This is my favorite time of day to shoot photos in Times Square (New York City). On a winter day it comes around at about 4:30 in the evening. The color in the sunset sky is perfectly balanced with street lighting, giving the entire scene a beautiful, colorful glow. The exposure becomes very easy to make because the light is evenly balanced fro sky to cityscape. You just have to focus on getting a great composition. Camera: Canon 10D, Sigma 24-70, F3.5-5.6 lens. ISO 400, F:6.7, 1/10 second. I was able to get a sharp image at this very low shutter speed by bracing my body against a sturdy light pole while shooting.

Times Square Blues. I call this photo Times Square Blues for the blue overcast sunset sky that adds a colorful element to this setting. Sunsets in winter provide the best light for photographing Times Square (in my opinion). However, it does not last long. You may have a window of no more than a half hour of colorful sunset / twilight light. That diffused natural light adds a warm balance to the street lights. Once the sky becomes completely dark, the colors become harsher with little or no shadow detail. The 15 minutes before and after sunset are golden for great cityscapes!

In this Times Square setting, you see the New York Times building in the right mid-ground. This view is from Eighth Avenue, approaching 42nd Street. Camera: Canon 10D, Tokina 19-35mm lens, tripod, daylight white balance.

Sunset On The Good Land. This photo was captured while travelling along the Old Route 66 in Arizona headed towards Flagstaff after visiting The Petrified Forest National Park. I was captivated by the warm sunset colors and the rich tones in this old farm machinery. I pulled of the side of the road, and used a Tamron 70-300mm lens on my Nikon D40 to get a frame filling portrait of this handsome relic. It was the last photo of the day before heading into Flagstaff for the night. It was the perfect ending to an amazing day of travel!

Sunset Light, Phoenix, Arizona. It is about 6pm on a November evening, after a rare light rain. I grab my dinner, toss it in the car, and drive to Papago Park in time to watch the sunset. The sunset light paints the red rock of Papago, providing a bit of colorful entertainment that gives the day pause and time for meaningful reflection. This view of God’s handiwork is not the Grand Canyon or Bryce, but for a scene that lives practically in my backyard, I am very thankful.
