A Storm In The Jemez Red Rocks, New Mexico. I love this! Dramatic weather patterns and red rock mesas in the Jemez Red Rocks make for great photo opportunities! This scene was captured on the Jemez Pueblo (Jemez Mountains, New Mexico) near the Walatowa Visitors Center. The Jemez Pueblo is a Native American tribe located in north-central New Mexico, approximately 50 miles northwest of Albuquerque. They are one of the remaining 19 pueblos of New Mexico, encompassing over 89,000 acres of land and home to over 3,400 tribal members. The people of Jemez cherish their ancestral traditions, and are proud to integrate their culture with modern society. This Red Rocks area of the Jemez Pueblo is open to visitors, and is used by the Pueblo for flea markets and special events. During the summer Indian Fry Bread vendors set up here. Yummy!

Camera: Nikon D40 and 18-55mm kit lens, ISO 200, F:14, 1/50 second exposure. Raw image edited with Capture NX.

Jemez Before The Storm. This scene was captured in the Jemez Mountains, on the Jemez Pueblo in New Mexico. It shows the red rock buttes near the Walatowa Visitors Center as seen during an impending storm. I love storm light for the dramatic mood it can add to a photo. However, being in the mountains with a 6 foot metal tripod fully extended as lightning flashes around you is not a smart idea. Therefore, I was not out photographing for too long here. This was shot with my favorite landscape camera, the humble Nikon D40, and the 18-55mm kit lens.

This scene captures a setting after a storm in Phoenix, Arizona. The natural light had a charming painterly effect on the landscape here seen in the red rock environs of Papago Park. The gnarled tree in the foreground adds a nice bit of mystery to the mood as well. Captured during the monsoon season in Phoenix, post-storm light is some of the most subtle and beguiling that can paint a landscape. I anticipated that this storm would end near sunset, and simply waited in my car for the light. Indeed, rain itself is such a rare occurrence in the desert here that watching it can be quite entertaining. This scene was captured with a tripod mounted Olympus E-300, and kit lens.

This photo shows a brewing storm over the red rock buttes of the Jemez Mountains. This setting is from the Jemez Pueblo, near the Walatowa Visitors Center.
