This beautiful white flower was captured over six years ago at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It is one of my earliest efforts to capture the beauty of flowers, and was shot with a Samsung GX 1S DSLR camera mated to an old Kiron zoom lens (I forget the exact model, I believe it was a 70-210mm). I was discovering how much a complimentary background can add to images of flowers. In this scene, the blurred background of nearby blooms created a pastel watercolor like effect that effectively frames this white flower.

White Flower With Mat & Frame. This detail of a lovely white flower was photographed seven years ago at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was shot with an old Minolta X-700 film SLR and a Vivitar 70-150mm macro lens, on Kodak Ultracolor 400 negative film. The negative was scanned with a Nikon Coolscan V (which I now regret selling). To create this image, I cropped the original image, gave it a slight painterly effect and digital mat and frame using Fotosketcher.

Spring White Flowers. These beautiful white flowers were photographed in the spring at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Rio Grande Botanic Garden is a delightful break from the high desert environs of Albuqueruqe, providing a beautiful array of flora year round.

This image was shot with a Nikon D40, and Nikon 55-200mm VR lens with Nikon 6T Close-up Diopter. Adding a close-up lens to the 55-200mm lens allowed me to get closer to the flowers for a tighter composition and reduced the depth of field. The reduced depth of field enhanced the background blur behind the flowers, making it softer. Adding a cheap diopter to your zoom lens with macro focus opens creative possibilities when shooting flower close-ups.

Pink Flower On Green. This flower closeup was captured on a beautiful spring day in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden about six years ago. One does not think of Albuquerque, New Mexico as a verdant locale rich in flowers. It is not. However, the Rio Grande Botanic Garden provided an oasis in that desert setting. The flower beds here were a constant source of delight for me, and soothed any east coast homesickness that occurred from time to time during my years spent here. This image was captured on 35mm negative film (Kodak Ultracolor, 100 ASA) and scanned using a Nikon Coolscan IV.

Flawed Daisies, Rio Grande Botanic Garden ⇑

This flawed yet still beautiful daisies were captured at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I shot this photo with my Nikon D40, and the Nikon 55-200mm VR lens. I used a Nikon 3T close-up diopter with the lens. This allows me to focus closer and to have a narrow depth of field that allows for beautiful blur of the foreground and background flowers.

Spring Flowers In Color! ⇑

Aaaaah, the joyous colors of flowers in bloom! These colorful spring flowers were photographed at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

This photo was captured with a Nikon D40 with a Nikon 55-200mm VR lens on tripod. To get the really close focus seen here I also used a Nikon 3T diopter. The diopter is an auxiliary lens that screws on like a filter. It allows closer focus and enlarges the image. I am pretty sure the 3T is discontinued (I purchased it used years ago). It is a very high quality diopter that provides sharp images with a very pretty bokeh (background blur). They provide a great value for macro photography if you can find one.

Seeing a bed of colorful tulips on a beautiful spring day is a joyous thing to behold! This tulip photo was captured at the Rio Grande Botanic Garden in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Despite the dry high-desert climate, they make a valiant effort to grow tulips here, near the bosque of the Rio Grande. This botanic garden was my lifeline for blooming plants and flowers for the time I spent in New Mexico. This was photographed with a Nikon D40 and 50-200mm VR lens.
