Why Used DSLR Camera Reviews? I know a thing or two about used DSLR cameras. The majority of the DSLR cameras I have owned were purchased used. Like cars, they depreciate considerably when purchased second hand. That saves the buyer money. Also, much like cars, they are often traded in or sold long before they reach the end of their useful life. With the upgrade fever that visits camera owners on a yearly basis, it is quite easy to find DSLR models that are one to three years old in mint condition. I have even found four year old models still new in the box at giveaway prices. Since this is my hobby, and not a source of income, I look to save money on the tools of the craft. Besides, in this tough economy why spend more than you need to?

I have also come to discover a dirty little secret about digital cameras (especially DSLR models). In spite of all the new models introduced each year, the visible image quality improves little, especially if you stick to the lowest ISO settings (100-400 ISO) for best image quality. In fact, your choice of post-processing software and methods has more to do with final image quality than the model of camera used. The first generation of 6 and 8 megapixel DSLR’s are wonderful bargains used, and can produce a very satisfying image when used with skill . . . Much like any camera.

I have purchased and used DSLR cameras from Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma, Olympus, and Sony extensively. My reviews will not be based upon technical tests, but rather, use of the camera over a period of months. In fact, you will see an extensive portfolio of photos for each of the camera I review. I will focus on what really matters: The usability and durability of the camera, and the final image quality.
You will see examples of the quality of work that can be achieved with the kit lenses that come with each camera reviewed. I am a big fan of kit lenses. The key to their use is understanding and working within their limitations for best results.
Stay tuned for the first review. It will be for an “ugly duckling” of a camera that received lukewarm praise in the media, yet became one of my favorite DSLR cameras of all time. Our first Used DSLR Camera Review for the Olympus Evolt E-300 is now online!
