It is interesting how the concept of celebrity has changed over the years. In times past, you needed to have talent of some sort to be celebrated, perhaps as an actor or singer. Now, in the age of reality TV, any sort of publicity or notoriety can make you an instant celebrity. People will tune in faithfully each week simply to watch you perform life’s most mundane tasks. I sometimes wonder if this obsession with the minutiae of others lives is making us a nation of busybodies and meddlers, who view the right to access and judge the private affairs of others as our due. It is an unhealthy trend. Our thinking is being shaped by an obsession with trivia and gossip rather than more newsworthy media content. We are not the better for it.
