Summer, South Street Seaport

At The South Street Seaport

This photo shows a docked boat used for tours and events at the South Street Seaport in downtown Manhattan in New York City. Captured on a pleasant summer afternoon, it shows a portion of the Brooklyn skyline in the background. This was captured with a Canon Powershot G9, a recent inexpensive used camera purchase. This camera was purchased out of a desire to have a lightweight, quality camera that I could carry at all times. This is a satisfactory second camera for dslr users looking for a lightweight second camera. I’ll post more of my thoughts on this camera in a later post.

New Yorkers Are Cool

One thing I can say about New Yorkers is that they are very comfortable in their own skin. Most New Yorkers assume that if you point a camera their way, it is probably because they look good. You see that measure of confidence again and again, especially in the more fashionable New York Neighborhoods. I must say that New Yorkers are some of the most interesting people you will see anywhere. The cacophonous mix of attitudes and sub-cultures is as interesting as the mix of colors and fashion. Yes, New Yorkers are cool . . .

Bees, Flowers, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn, New York City

This photo showing a bee alighting a summer flower, was captured during one of my weekly visits to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in Brooklyn, New York City. I make it a point to visit either the Brooklyn or New York Botanic Garden one afternoon a week. It is a reminder of the extraordinary design and engineering that fills the natural world. Yet, that design that feeds my heart and soul in a way that no human invention can. As I told a vendor outside of the garden, I leave the garden every week a renewed man.

This image was shot handheld with a Canon Rebel XS, and Canon 55-250mm lens. I used 400 ISO, and the IS (Image Stabilization) feature on the lens to insure that the shutter speed was fast enough to prevent blur.

Butterfly & Flowers In Abstract

This photo shows a beautiful butterfly amid flowers on an early summer day. The butterfly was in constant motion, as was I, seeking to capture its image. This frame captures the energy and motion of this busy creature in an abstract form. I also find the colors and contrast in this setting quite appealing. This photo was shot at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn, New York.

Times Square Glass & Steel

While Times Square has been long known for its outsized collection of billboards, they have gained eye-appeal by the adoption of lcd style displays. Adding still more “bling” is the modern glass sheathing used to update many buildings in the area. Thye multiply the effect of modern lcd billboards by bouncing and reflecting light, and can add a spectacular effect when the sky is colorful at twilight. This photo was captured just before sunset using a Canon 10D and Tokina 19-35mm lens.

Times Square, In Blues & Orange

Aaaah, if Times Square was music, then this would be its hot tenor-sax jazz riff with icy cool tones of blue and orange. This photo, captured at twilight, shortly after sunset, shows the wonderful color abstractions possible in this pulsating New York City neighborhood. I love to rotate and skew my camera viewfinder looking for abstract and improvisational compositions in Times Square. The “Golden Hour” around sunset is the perfect time to do so. Moody blue light adorns Times Square, New York City in this twilight photo shot on a winter evening. When I photograph Times Square, I see it as an colorful abstract collage that can be shot from any angle. Capture it in the right light, and it glows! Camera: Canon 10D, Tokina 19-35mm lens.
