Empty Things, Times Square

I call this scene Empty Things, Times Square. To my mind, it is a fitting illustration of the overstuffed lifestyle that has become the ideal in our culture. We crave things, and spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about, pursuing, and hoarding things. This 42nd Street, Times Square (New York City) scene is chock-full of things designed to lure the eye, most of which offer little, if any, meaningful reward in return. Jesus Christ once made the observation: ” . . . you are anxious and disturbed about many things. A few things, though, are needed, or just one.” (Luke 10:42) That wise advice is a reminder that genuine happiness does not result from the accumulation of things. Keeping a simple eye, focused on what really matters in life leads to greater happiness.
