42nd Street, New York City in Twilight

This photo shows 42nd Street, New York City, in the heart of the Times Square neighborhood. It was captured during twilight, shortly after sunset. It is a good example of how post-processing can improve photo quality. In order to capture the full range of light in this photo, it was necessary to use the digital equivalents of old-fashioned “dodge and burn” tools that allow selective lightening and darkening of portions of the image. It was shot handheld, using the Image Stabilization (IS) feature of my Canon Rebel XS and 18-55mm EF-S IS kit lens. The raw image file was edited in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

Adobe Photoshop is considered the industry standard for editing digital images. However, it is an expensive software, and offers a range of capabilities that go beyond what the typical digital photographer needs for post-processing. Frankly, it is not a smart investment unless you earn an income from graphic design or photography. A low cost alternative to Photoshop is Adobe Photoshop Elements. This low priced, consumer oriented software offers most of the digital editing tools of Photoshop and the same raw image editing tools. Available for less than $100, it is the perfect solution for someone who wants the power of Photoshop without the bloated expense. Adobe Photoshop Elements has a gentler learning curve and provides an excellent introduction to raw image editing and processing for the new photographer.
