35th Street, 6th Avenue

35th Street, 6th Avenue. Our lives are satiated with entertainment. In this “slice of life” photo, captured on 35th Street and 6th Avenue in New York City, there are a minimum of three advertisements for movies and television shows. Starting in the background, there is an advertisement for a cable network reality show on the telephone booth. There is another advertisement for a television series on the display anchored to the subway entrance, and the child’s backpack is a product manufactured as a tie-in to a popular movie. And that’s not all! The wire stand next to the subway entrance has a stack of free newspapers, typically light on news and filled with movie and television advertising. One study revealed that children spend an average of 4 hours a day in front of a TV screen, and an additional 2 hours on the computer (outside of schoolwork). What effect does this have on a child’s mental development and physical health?
