125th Street, Harlem

125th Street, Harlem. This photo shows a “slice of life” in this vibrant New York City community. 125th Street is the commercial heart of Harlem, and its busiest shopping district. Interestingly, 125th Street sits on top of a fault line that seismologists feel may have contributed to minor earthquakes (measuring less than 1 on the Richter Scale) in 2001. A rift in the crust runs along underneath this street and is known as the 125th Street Fault. The fault line creates a fault valley deep enough to require the IRT Broadway-Seventh Avenue Line to become a trestle bridge between 122nd and 135th Streets.
