This shot pretty much says it all. This Jemez, New Mexico sunset setting, captured six years ago, is an icon of the thrilling times spent exploring the southwestern United States. That car is special as well. I put over 110,000 miles on that 6 cyl. 1999 Mercury Cougar just exploring the United States. It has traveled from coast to coast (New York to California) twice, and was used to explore the nooks and crannies of New Mexico and Arizona for more than five years. I retired it at 200,000 miles only after the transmission started to fail. I have no complaints. Outside of normal maintenance and repairs (tires, brakes, tuneups, and fluid changes, etc.) it had been a very comfortable, reliable and economic vehicle that I trusted to take to me to remote parts of the southwestern US.
Seven years ago, I decided to buy this American car for traveling (purchased used) and sell my small import only because I was fearful of not having German auto parts easily available in case I broke down in the “heartland.” Plus, it was a larger, more comfortable vehicle for long distance driving. It was bought for cash (less than $3000) because I did not want to travel cross country in an expensive car. Nevertheless, I became quite attached to it. Some of my most memorable sights, like the Rockies, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Jemez, Santa Fe, White Sands, and most of Route 66 were seen for the first time in this car. With all the roads traveled, it never left me stranded. Of all the vehicles I have owned this will be my favorite for those great times. Photo captured with the Nikon D40 and 18-55mm kit lens on tripod.
