Red Rock Buttes, Jemez Mountains, New Mexico. ⇑
The Jemez Mountains in New Mexico has an unforgettable charm. In fact, it is the place I most often visited for recreation and photography during the three years I lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Why? Just look at that red rock! The Jemez Mountains, while possessing a quiet beauty, has an amazing range of natural features and attractions.A leisurely day trip on the Jemez Mountain Trail takes you past handsome geological formations, ancient Indian ruins, an enduring Indian pueblo, and the remainders of the area’s logging, mining and ranching heritage. For me, the red rock buttes and terrain of Jemez remains one of its most compelling features.
This photo of the Jemez is my all time favorite. It was captured using an expired roll of Kodak Gold 200 with a Canon Elan II SLR camera, one of the last film cameras I’ve owned. The resulting negative was scanned using a Nikon Coolscan V. Showing visible film grain, it is not a perfect image. However, it renders the colors of this special place in a way that is faithful to my memory. This is the single image that best captures the blessing of enjoying a beautiful fall day in the Jemez. The joyous blue New Mexico sky kissed by billowing clouds provide the perfect compliment to the warm pinkish hued volcanic rock of the Jemez.
