New Jersey Performing Arts Center, NJPAC, Sunset View

The stately NJPAC (New Jersey Performing Arts Center) is featured in this winter photo with brilliant sunset colors adorning the handsome brick facade of this Newark, New Jersey icon. NJPAC was designed by Barton Myers of Los Angeles, whose firm, Barton Myers Associates, has earned an international reputation for excellence in architectural design with projects ranging from residential homes to large urban developments.

Architect Myers, discussing NJPAC’s design in a 1996 Star Ledger article, observed: “[What] sets NJPAC apart is what it doesn’t have. This is not a theater such as we know about, a solemn temple to the arts where the dress code is black-tie and the etiquette is stiff. This is a celebration of people, community and urban life. Sure, we’ll make art and witness it, but we’ll do it in an entertaining way, a way that suits New Jersey.” The design is inviting and approachable, a feeling enhanced by the use of warm red brick in the building’s facade. Having the structure placed close to the street also provides a greater sense of intimacy and accessibility.

This photo was captured on one of the coldest days of the winter. I can remember quite clearly the frigid wind that whipped around me as I captured this shot. It was worth it! Winter often provides some of the most intensely colorful sunsets, and the vivid blue tones in the sky are nicely balanced by the lights illuminating the facade. Creating a photo like this is all in the timing. It requires waiting until the sunset colors are at their peak. That period may last less than five minutes so you must be observant and setup in advance to capture the best light. This will allow you to get the most intense color in your photo.
