Orange Wildflower With Bee

Orange Wildflower With Bee, A New York City Native
This photo shows a wildflower in The Conservatory, Central Park, New York City, hosting a busy bee. The bee was quite vigorous so there is a bit of motion blur as a result. The early 2011 summer here in New York City has a healthy population of bees, if I can judge from what I’ve seen in local parks and gardens in New York City. I’ve never found it as easy to photograph bees hard at work as I have this year. I’ve discovered a DSLR camera trait that you need to be mindful of when shooting red flowers (I’ve seen this tendency in both Canon and Nikon DSLR’s). One more than one model I’ve used there is a tendency to oversaturate the red channel . When you see the jpeg or raw image captured by the camera, the red or orange petals of flowers tend to be oversaturated to the point of clipping. This means that detail is lost because the red color is too strong. It is often necessary to use the highlight recovery tool in your raw image editor (a good reason to shoot raw) to recover detail lost in oversaturated areas of the image.
