Female Mallard On The Pond

Female Mallard On The Pond

This photo shows a female mallard in the fishing lagoon in Papago Park, Phoenix, Arizona, during the golden hour before sunset. This time is called the golden hour by photographers because the natural light takes on a golden hue as the sun sits very low on the horizon. It is a very flattering light for photographing wildlife as seen here. It adds a warm hue to the mallards color and deepens the tones in the water, creating a visually pleasing color palette. This photo was captured during the winter season when coots, widgeons and pintailed ducks migrate to the lagoons in Papago Park for the winter. You can see an American Widgeon in the background of this photo. The marvels of creation are endlessly fascinating!

This photo was captured with a Nikon D40 and Nikon 55-200mm VR lens handheld at 400 ISO.
