Cherry Blossoms, Thinking More Like An Artist

Cherry Blossoms, Thinking More Like An Artist

I have had a bit of time to myself among the cherry blossom trees this week. I am using these delightful occasions to train my eye to see artistic forms in the patterns and colors created by nature. I am more deliberate when I shoot now, shooting fewer frames with stronger compositions. I hope to bring a greater sense of artistic vigor to my work. Inspired by Japanese calligraphy and watercolors, I sought to create a similar feel in this photographic composition. The blurred background feels much like washes of pale watercolors, and the cherry blossom branches suggests the elegant curves of calligraphic letters.

Camera: Canon Rebel XS, Canon 50-250mm lens. ISO 200 F:8 125mm, 1/500sec. I carefully framed this shot to insure that all of the background elements were distant enough to blur smoothly when I focused on the foreground cherry blossoms. I always consider how the background colors and textures add or distract from the overall composition. In this photo, the blurred white and pink cherry blossom blooms in the background added a pleasing element to this composition. Photo by Don Peterson.
