Essex County Cherry Blossoms Update – April 9, 2011

This photo, captured today (April 9, 2011, the first day of the Essex County Cherry Blossom Festival) shows pink cherry blossom blooms near the light rail station in Branch Brook Park, Essex County (Newark) NJ. These newly planted cherry blossom trees with clusters of tiny pink blossoms are the earliest blooming trees in the park, and the only ones in full bloom at the moment. The showstopping “grande dames of the ball,” the mature, large white cherry blossom trees, are not yet in bloom. As a result, the park did look a bit threadbare today. However, the weather was beautiful, and the park was a delight. So come and stretch those muscles that have been hibernating all winter! Next weekend should find the park in resplendent bloom, if the weather agrees.
The photo below also shows Branch Brook Park near the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center in Essex County as of today. As you can see, the oldest cherry blossom trees are still a few days away from bloom.
