This photo shows Peterson’s Mercantile in Goldfield Ghost Town, the resurrected mining town on The Apache Trail. In the background, you can see a bit of the majestic Superstition Mountain, the most prominent landmark on the Apache Trail, Arizona. This attraction provides a nice introduction to the Superstition Mountains and The Apache Trail, and is a great place to take the kids. The local burger joint makes good burgers too!

The concept of parks and recreation in this part of the country is quite different to what I am used to in New York City. If you get lost in Central Park . . . Well, you really can’t get lost in Central Park for more than a few minutes. However, if you wander from a hiking trail in the Superstition Mountains you could well be lost for days, even weeks. That is, if sudden changes in weather or a lack of drinking water does not get you first. It’s rather humbling to consider. More than once I’ve had the brief panic that comes from misjudging landmarks and taking a wrong turn. Out here, you learn rather quickly to respect your environment, and know your limitations.
