Albuquerque Gardening Help

Landscaping in Albuquerque can be a challenge for the new resident. The soil composition presents unique challenges. Also, there are the stringent water conservation requirements that limit what types of plants, grass and trees can be grown on home property. New homes in Albuquerque are required to use water-saving Xeriscape landscaping methods.

Every new home buyer should learn about Xeriscaping. An excellent resource on this method of landscaping is found here on the Official Website of the City of Albuquerque.

Beyond the overall landscaping methods used, you may need help with specific gardening problems, such as soil preparation, pest control, etc. An excellent resource is the Albuquerque Area Extension Master Gardeners. You can get free advice from their Master Gardeners, February through October, Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at two hotline locations:

Albuquerque Garden Center
10120 Lomas Blvd NE (Eubank & Lomas Blvds.)
Telephone: 292-7144

Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension Service (CES)
1510 Menaul NW (West of 12th St.)
Telephone: 243-1386

You can even bring plant or soil samples in or call them at the hotline number and times mentioned above. Their website is at http://www.abqmastergardeners.org

The two photos above show Albuquerque homes with typical Xeriscape landscaping, using hardier, water efficient plants and trees.
